  • Lab Supply supports PG research at Annual Biology Conference

Article

Highlighting our support of emerging research, Lab Supply has sponsored two prizes at the upcoming University of Canterbury Annual Biology Conference. A single day symposium organised by the School of Biological Sciences, ABC provides an opportunity for postgraduate research students to present their findings to colleagues, peers, and the wider scientific community.

The communication of science and the presentation of research ideas and results are important skills for emerging scientists. The ABC allows students to develop public speaking skills and gain confidence and experience in delivering a presentation to a larger audience.

A number or prizes will be awarded to students displaying excellence in publication and presentation. Lab Supply is sponsoring

  • Best Journal Article by a PhD Student
  • Most Innovative Research

The School of Biological Sciences is a vibrant research environment, with research conducted across three main fields: Biotechnology, Biodiversity and Biosecurity.

This years’ PhD candidates delve into wide array of topics ranging from exploring inbreeding depression in the endangered tchūriwat’ | tūturuatu, investigating the use of a bio-stimulant as a seed priming agent to enhance crop performance and using cross-species comparisons to develop an investigative approach for cognitive processing of visual information during sustained attention tasks.

The ‘Most Innovative Research’ category will see all conference presenters vie for the award. This will bring into the mix research on Parkinson’s disease, protein extraction from green leaves, climate change-proof salmon, and the courtship behaviours of the wide-bodied pipefish, among others.

“Sponsoring events that recognise and promote the next generation of researchers is a natural extension of the work we do at Lab Supply”, says Adam Spurway, Director.

“We see this as our opportunity to encourage the best and brightest young minds to challenge the status quo and change what’s possible in science today.”
